By combining a Wonde subscription with a premium Observatory account, our users gain access to our MIS analysis section. No more hours spent trying to make sense of excel data - we highlight data against an organisation's average and national averages!
We have focused purely on the pupil first census data so that users can see all the data needed for a single school in an easy-to-read, digestible format.
Working to the current DfE guidelines, regardless of what MIS you use, Observatory will work with you so that you can get the data you need. We will only show you the relevant and included data within your MIS.
For information on our MIS Staff Workforce analysis section, you can visit our dedicated guide here.
Please Note: MIS Analysis is only available to Observatory Premium customers. If you wish to get in touch about signing up for Observatory Premium, please contact perspective@angelsolutions.co.uk.

Need More Detailed Help?
We will use Wonde to connect with your MIS system, which will migrate your MIS information into Observatory.
To set up Wonde in your schools, we have a quick set-up form that lets us know who the key contact will be for each school. Our team will send that to you during the setup process. Whoever you select will be responsible for authorising the Wonde connection.
If you already have Wonde in your schools, all they need to do is authorise our connection.
If you haven't got Wonde, you will need to install the software. This is simple to do, and Wonde will be on hand to help you every step of the way.
Once the data integration is set up, your MIS data will flow into Observatory and be visible via the MIS panel within the Analysis section of Observatory.
Rapid School Updates via the Analysis Screen
Did you know that you can directly add and edit key information for schools via this analysis screen? Our Activity Slider lets you rapidly update school KPIs, visits, actions, and contacts with just a few clicks!
To do this, click on the relevant activity slider icon on the right-hand side of any analysis screen. The blue icon is our KPI editor, and the green icon is for adding visits, actions and contacts.
Add Activity Slider
Click the green plus icon on the right-hand side to quickly add visits, actions, and contacts to a school via the analysis page.
The slider will then pop out, allowing you to select a school to focus on. Once a school is selected, you can then add new items, such as Actions and Record of Visits, from this menu.
Each option will take you directly to the relevant page to perform these tasks.
You can also navigate directly to the school's full dashboard or quickly view/edit the school's KPIs.
KPI Activity Slider
To quickly update KPIs for a school, click the blue icon on the right-hand side.
The slider will then pop out, allowing you to select a school to focus on. You can then quickly update as many KPIs as required without leaving the page.
This is super helpful because you can use the analysis you're already viewing on this page to inform the decisions behind your KPIs. Does the analysis show that attendance is an issue or strength in a school? Quickly update your attendance KPIs from this menu without needing to navigate between dashboards or screens.
Any change in selection will be auto-saved.
If you need to add any additional notes or contextual information against a KPI, click on the KPI name.
Add as much or as little detail as required and click Save Notes when done.
Context Tab
The Context tab shows you an overview of all the main areas of your MIS data. It includes your contextual information (such as gender and SEN), summarised in easy-to-see charts and graphs. There's also a handy school year breakdown further down the page.
You can choose to visualise data for the whole organisation or an individual school by using the Data To Visualise dropdown.
When you make a selection, the system will take a second to load the new data set.
Please Note: Data is refreshed overnight, so any changes in your MIS will be reflected in Observatory the following day.
The Data as of filter allows you to select a specific point in time and view the latest data up to that date.
The Context data is also exportable as a PDF, like many of the tools you already use within Observatory. Click the Export PDF button to begin a download.
Attendance
The Attendance tab focuses solely on your attendance data. You can track authorised and unauthorised absences across the entire organisation or for individual schools at the click of a button!
As always, we display useful filters at the top of the page for you to use, such as the area of focus and date ranges.
The Highlight dropdown lets you choose a specific row to highlight in blue, bringing the focus to that data set but also making that row the comparative data set.
For example, by default, the National row will be selected, so the value on the right will display whether the value of every other row is above or below it. In this example, the national figure is 95.95%, the organisation figure is 93.04%, so the value alongside the organisation row shows 2.91% in the negative.
If you highlight a different row, each other value will be compared to that.
The School List option displays two rows at the top (for National and Organisation aggregates), then all schools in the organisation below.
Clicking on a school row will expand it to show the data split by school year.
You can also view a trend of your attendance data over time by selecting School List - Full Trend from the Data To Visualise dropdown.
The data will be reloaded, but each school will have its own chart spanning the date range you select using the Timeframe dropdown.
This is powerful and allows you to see how your attendance data trends across the year.
As always, you can export all data by clicking Export PDF.
Exclusions
The Exclusions tab focuses on your exclusion data, allowing you to drill into this aspect of the attendance data and analysis. The data can give you a key indicator of issues within the school and can be used to inform the development of policies aimed at reducing exclusion rates and improving educational outcomes for all students.
As always, we display useful filters at the top of the page for you to use, such as the area of focus and date ranges.
Data Status
The Data Status tab gives you a clear overview of the current status of your school's MIS data connection in Observatory. If there are any problems with the connection between Observatory and one or your schools, you'll see that here and can run the necessary steps to rectify this.
The Status tab is the main column that displays whether or not the data is flowing.
A status of Online confirms the connection has been approved and data is flowing successfully. Hovering over this option will confirm the approval date, status and the last time the connection was checked.
If this shows as Offline, then Observatory has been unable to pull data from that school's MIS. There could be a few reasons for this:
The link between that school and Wonde has been broken due to an MIS issue. This could be downtime or that someone has inadvertently revoked the permissions required by Wonde to pull data.
If a school is showing as offline, contact them directly and ask them to review the connection. If they are still struggling to restore the connection, please contact perspectivesupport@angelsolutions.co.uk.
A school will show as Needs Approval if Wonde is awaiting approval at the MIS side in order to pull data. If this is displayed, contact the school and ensure they accept the approval from Wonde.
Final Checks confirms that everything is approved, and we are just awaiting the first collection. This happens overnight, so this status should change to Online the following day.
The final four columns are explained below. Hovering over any value within them will display the earliest and most recent dates we were able to pull the data.
The Attendance Summary column displays the most recent date that attendance data was successfully pulled from the school's MIS. The summary tab relates to a summary of the entire academic year up to this point.
Attendance Records refers to the most recent record, usually reflecting todays date (unless the connection is offline).
Students confirms that we are successfully pulling all student data from the MIS.
Exclusions confirms that we are successfully pulling all exclusions data from the MIS.
As always, the Export option allows you to extract the data within this tab from the system.
Downloads
The Downloads tab provides you with several pre-defined exports of key MIS data using the underlying data pulled from your schools.
Clicking on an export will pop up some options for you to drill into your criteria. You can select the specific point in time for the data set, specific schools only or specific school types only.
When you're happy with your selection, click Download.
If we have been unable to find data for your selected criteria, this message will be displayed.
Data Quality
The Data Quality tab is an incredibly useful area for you to identify any issues within data that you wouldn't necessarily have been notified about from your MIS.
Of the data we pull from your schools, we flag anything that may be 'wrong' with it via this Data Quality tab.
The data will display one of four possible flags.
| There is no invalid or missing data, and everything looks accurate | |
| There is at least one record where the data looks invalid. For example, a UPN with an incorrect character length. | |
| The data could be correct, but the system is unsure. For example, where the pupil's name may not typically be associated with the assigned gender. | |
| The data is missing from your MIS completely. |
You can drill down into specific areas of the data if needed, by using the filters at the top of this tab. If you need to check specifically for issues with student data, attendance, or exclusions, or you only want to return things that are flagged as invalid, these filters are invaluable.
When data is displayed, If you have any rows that you want to double-check, click the Detail option on the right-hand side. This expands the view for the selected school and shows you all the pupils and the data we have pulled from your MIS.
This view will clearly display with the above flags to signify where there are any data concerns.
Click here for more information on things flagged as a query or invalid.
To return back to the default view, click All Schools Summary on the left-hand side.
