By combining a Wonde subscription with a premium Observatory account, our MIS Staff Workforce analysis section allows you to explore the composition and attendance of your staff across your organisation and within individual schools. It includes two key areas:
- Staff Workforce - Shows information such as age, contract types, and length of service,
- Staff Attendance - Provides insight into absence levels and trends.
The data shown is based on what’s recorded in your school's MIS and may change depending on the date and filters you’ve selected at the top of the screen.
Please Note: MIS Analysis is only available to Observatory Premium customers. If you wish to get in touch about signing up for Observatory Premium, please contact perspective@angelsolutions.co.uk.
Quick Steps
- Click Analysis on your main toolbar.
- Within the MIS Analysis Panel, click See Areas.
- Select the Staff area.
When you visit the MIS Staff Workforce section, you’ll see two tabs at the top of the page:
Staff Workforce – View workforce breakdowns across schools and the organisation, including age, gender, contract type and more.
Staff Attendance – Understand absence levels, absence reasons, lost working days, and patterns over time.
Need More Detailed Help?
We will use Wonde to connect with your MIS, which will migrate your MIS data into Observatory.
To set up Wonde in your schools, we have a quick set-up form that lets us know who the key contact will be for each school. Our team will send that to you during the setup process. Whoever you select will be responsible for authorising the Wonde connection.
If you already have Wonde in your schools, all they need to do is authorise our connection.
If you don't have Wonde, you will need to install the software. This is simple to do, and Wonde will be on hand to help you every step of the way.
Once the data integration is set up, your MIS data will flow into Observatory and be visible via the MIS panel within the Analysis section of Observatory.
Staff Workforce
The Staff Workforce section gives you a detailed snapshot of who makes up your workforce, using charts, summaries and comparators to help you understand the makeup of staff across your organisation or within individual schools.
Employee data is based on an employee's employment start and end dates. This includes data on staff roles, age groups, gender, contract types, length of service, and more. The aim is to help you answer questions such as:
- What’s the gender or age profile of my workforce?
- How many teachers vs. support staff do we have?
- What is the average length of service?
- Are there any gaps in the data coming from our MIS?
You can switch between viewing data for the entire organisation, a list of your schools or an individual school using the Data To Visualise dropdown menu at the top of the screen.
Like many of the tools you already use within Observatory, the Staff Workforce data can be exported as a PDF. Click the Export PDF button to begin a download.
As always, we display useful filters at the top of the page for you to use, such as the Data as of, Length of Service, and which data you'd like to visualise, etc. The data will refresh each time you select a new filter.
Staff Attendance
The Staff Attendance section provides a summary of absences recorded in your school's MIS, helping you identify trends, patterns and potential areas for further exploration.
You can switch between viewing data for the entire organisation, a list of your schools or an individual school using the Data To Visualise dropdown menu at the top of the screen.
The date range selected at the top of the screen controls the absence data you see. Only absences that fall within this timeframe will be included in the figures, so changing the dates will update all the charts and summaries accordingly.
We also display useful filters at the top of the page for you to use, such as Age Group, Length of Service, and which data you'd like to visualise, and many more. The data will refresh each time you select a new filter.
As always, you can export all data by clicking Export PDF.
Data Quality
The Data Quality tab is an incredibly useful area for identifying issues in your MIS data that you may not have been alerted to within your system. This section highlights anything that looks unusual, incomplete or doesn’t meet expected formatting rules, helping you stay on top of your data across all schools.
We automatically flag any records that appear to contain problematic data based on what’s been pulled from your MIS. Each flagged entry is assigned one of three statuses:
| Flag | What it means |
|---|---|
| There is no invalid or missing data, and everything looks accurate. | |
| The data could be correct, but the system is unsure. For example, a staff member may have two assigned roles within their school. | |
| The data from your MIS is completely missing. |
You can filter the results at the top of the tab to narrow your view to specific areas, such as:
-
Staff Workforce only
-
Quality Level
-
Problem Data
This makes it easy to focus on just the areas you need to review.
When data is shown in the table, clicking the Detail option on the right-hand side will expand the selected school or staff member. This view shows you all staff records (or specific staff memeber data in other tabs), with clear indicators for any fields that have been flagged. It’s an efficient way to validate the data and trace back what might need updating in your MIS.
If you’d like to investigate further or work offline, you can also download the full dataset using the Export option.
Understanding how the data behaves
A few helpful things to keep in mind when interpreting the data in the Staff Workforce and Staff Attendance tabs:
Staff Workforce: The figures shown reflect only the staff with a valid contract as of the selected date. For example, if you go back to a date in previous years, you may see different totals, including staff who have since left.
We collect your Staff Workforce data back to the point your MIS authorises us to on Wonde, so in theory, if the data allows, we could go back several years.
Staff Absence: Because absences typically last more than one day, the attendance data is controlled by the timeframe selected at the top of the screen. Only absences within that timeframe will be included.
Absence data is collected across a two-year window, so we'll collect absence data for the current academic year and the previous academic year.
Working days lost rely entirely on what the school has recorded as working days in their MIS. We don’t make assumptions about term dates, weekends, or staff rotas, so accuracy depends on what’s been entered at the school level.
